| Writing That Retells a Favorite Book or Story
Contributed by Ethel Bojorquez, Teacher Consultant, Central Los Angeles Writing Project, CSULA
Parents can use a strategy that teachers use to help improve children's reading and writing —— retelling. After reading a story or a children's book, parents can work with their children to retell the story orally and then to write and illustrate their retelling. This strategy will help children comprehend what they read. When they write a "retelling," they are learning skills they will use when they write summaries. Enjoy this example by a student who wrote and illustrated this retelling of one of her favorite books, Lupita Manana , with the support of her teacher, Ethel Bojorquez (click on the title to view the writing sample).
