My local writing project has helped me develop the confidence and self certitude to recognize what is and isn’t in the best interest of students. I teach to help students develop a voice. The Writing Project provided me with my professional voice.
NCWP has a very fluid, a very dynamic perspective on what is writing and who are writers. We practice many forms of expression and always identify as writers. Most recently, we have been engaged in fantastically creative “maker” projects. The definition of “text” takes on provocative meanings when you begin to look through a wide lens.
I have done so much productive work with fellow Writing Project consultants and teachers over the last 13 years and have worked in so many energetic Writing Project “think tanks” that I no longer work well in more “traditional learning environments.” In my classroom, we are all challenged and we all struggle. In any professional development that I lead, I bring questions instead of answers.
I believe that learning does not happen without self expression. The end goal for my students is always a “writing project.”
I recommend Program or Be Programmed by Douglas Rushkoff. I strongly agree with Rushkoff that we need to empower ourselves and our students with the ability to create using technology rather than allow ourselves to remain simply technological consumers.
