I participated in the first Invitational Leadership Institute of the Hawai`i Writing Project in 1980. The experience was, to put it mildly, transformational. I would never have thought of writing for publication in places such as English Journal. I never would have dared earn a Master’s in English literature, much less a doctorate in Composition. I certainly wouldn’t have written a book (Using Writing to Teach Literature, Heinemann, 1980) or a number of book chapters. I couldn’t have imagined myself in my current position as a professor of English Education at a large state university. I joke that my experiences with the writing project in 1980 changed me from a school marm into a professional. In truth, that is no joke!
After spending much of the year focused on academic writing and publication, during four weeks in the summer I return to personal writing—essays, memoir, poetry. These experiences refresh my writing soul, and allow me to return to the academic writing my position requires with renewed interest and energy.
As founding Director of our site, my Writing Project work has necessarily accelerated my knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning policies and practices at both the state and local levels. This has allowed me to plan more effectively for professional learning for our site Teacher Consultants as well as teachers throughout the communities that we serve.
