My local writing project has impacted me by helping me gain my voice, through writing, and allowing me to share my ideas about teaching writing to English Language Learners. I have also gained confidence in not only my teaching and writing capabilities, but also in myself, and as an educator, that has helped me grow and become even more open to change and innovation.
As a writer, I have returned to writing as a way to give voice to my thoughts and feelings. I have also incorporated writing into my class in many ways, and have felt more comfortable sharing my own writing with my students, other teachers, and the educational community at large.
As a Teacher Consultant and leader, the Writing Project has opened many doors for me, and given me opportunities to reach teachers who feel that through my experiences I can contribute to their own professional growth.
I believe that writing should be integrated into all subjects, and that writing is an important way to help students whose voices may not be heard share their ideas. As someone who has a hard time speaking out, writing allows me to express my thoughts, and I want to help kids express themselves through writing also.
I would recommend that teachers read Writing Sense: Integrated Reading and Writing for English Language Learners because it provides some great ideas for how to help English Language Learners make sense of writing and become better communicators. We all have English Language Learners in our class, and as well as we may be teaching, we need to explicitly teach to this audience because there are specific strategies that need to be used in order to target these learners. This book provides some strategies and ideas which teachers can start integrating into their elementary and intermediate classes.
