I started my career as someone who loved to read. Being involved in the Writing Project accelerated my growth as a writing teacher, helping me become not just someone who "assigned" writing, but someone who teaches it.
SJVWP helped me adopt a more positive relationship with writing--I've come to enjoy how writing gives me the opportunity to explore ideas and communicate my thoughts.
Writing Project work is by nature collaborative--I love the ways that our leadership team works together to create strong programs to support teachers.
One concept that is emerging for me right now is the role of play in writing. I see how my own writing can feel wooden when I rely on my regular routine--so I'm interested in the ways that play can stimulate and rejuvenate our writing.
I keep coming back to Deborah Dean's Strategic Writing. I love how she encourages teachers to foreground that writing is about being strategic and making thoughtful choices. I also appreciate that she encourages teachers to have students develop conditional knowledge through reflection.
