I was empowered to teach writing in science classes using the skills acquired from Writing Project activities. My students are reminded that excellent written communication skills are required in all arenas and not just their English class.
The confidence I needed to write bloomed with the help of writing groups; they helped me recognize the strength of my voice as a writer. Discovering that my struggles with the blank page and blinking cursor were shared experiences encouraged me to try different methods of breaking the block.
I can proudly say now that I AM a leader! No longer the shy, awkward science teacher in a room full of super stars. Presenting at conferences is a joy instead of the frightening ordeal that I always sprinted away from.
I believe that writing is challenging but a skill that is absolutely required for success. Even if my students don't walk away from my class remembering the laws and theories I taught, I want them to have had the opportunity to improve the skills they will use in whatever career they choose.
I have returned many times to Deborah Dean’s Strategic Writing. She offers strategies for teaching and expanding all parts of the writing process along with advice and examples of how to implement her ideas.
