- SJVWP Teacher Consultant
From my first day as a teacher, my local Writing Project—and my local Literature Project—has welcomed me. In the early 1990’s the local projects worked together to host monthly meet-ups of new teachers and teacher leaders where we would eat, drink, ask questions, talk practice, share lessons, connect, and discover resources to support our development as teachers. Ten years later, I became a Teacher Consultant (summer of 2004), stepping into the role of leader and mentor for new teachers at my site, in my district, and throughout the San Joaquin Valley.
Confidence. It has given me confidence I have something to contribute to teaching and learning.
Inspiration and opportunities. The San Joaquin Valley Writing Project continues to inspire me to share what I do and how I work with students and teachers, regularly bringing teachers and Teacher Consultants together to share best practices and creative approaches to student learning through writing.
We write to discover what we know; we write to learn. Like ourselves, our writing is always a work in progress.
The Writing Teacher’s Sourcebook. As teachers and writers, we need to explore possible mentors and multiple approaches to the teaching of writing to discover what works best for our students in our classrooms.
