California Writing Project

WELCOME TO THE CALIFORNIA WRITING PROJECT

The almost 50-year-old California Writing Project is a network of fifteen regional sites, eight housed on University of California campuses and seven on California State University campuses. We are the founding state network of the California Subject Matter Project and also of the National Writing Project.

The California Writing Project has a central mission: to improve student writing and learning by improving the teaching of writing. Every year thousands of educators participate in CWP campus, school, and district professional learning programs focused on improving the literacy and writing of their students, in their schools, in their communities. These educators, representing all grade levels from kindergarten through university, often teach in disciplines other than English. CWP also provides programs that support credential candidates, administrators, students, and parents.

While over 80% of CWP programs take place in schools and districts, educators are always welcome to join the project as individuals. One of the hallmarks of CWP is ensuring access for all interested educators, as well as offering them a professional home for the lifetime of their career.
